A wage rise is good news for workers and a cost for employers. For a supplier, the question is whether customers who bear that cost will keep paying on time. This article does not forecast defaults; it sets out what to watch.
What was announced
As reported by The Edge (Budget highlights), the minimum wage rises from RM1,700 to RM2,000 from June 2027, and MSMEs with sales under RM50 million are exempt. The full implementing order, including how the exemption will be applied, should be checked when it is published.
Which customers are affected
On the reported terms, the increase falls on larger employers outside the exemption, especially those with many workers near the minimum wage: manufacturing, retail, food service, security, cleaning and logistics. Their suppliers and subcontractors carry the indirect risk if margins tighten.
Warning signs that a customer is under pressure
- Payments drifting from 30 days to 45, then 60.
- Requests to split invoices or pay in parts.
- Part payments without explanation.
- Disputes raised only after a reminder is sent.
- Changes of finance staff or bank details.
- New charges registered against the company at SSM, or adverse entries on a credit report.
Any one of these can be innocent. Two or three together justify a review.
What to do before June 2027
- Review credit limits for customers in labour-intensive sectors.
- Update your credit checks; see credit checks before extending credit and CTOS report: what next.
- Tighten terms for new or slow payers: shorter terms, deposits or progress billing.
- Secure guarantees where the customer is a small company.
- Fix your escalation timetable so overdue accounts are acted on at set points. See our unpaid invoice checklist.
Why acting early matters more now
Budget 2027 also announced a higher individual bankruptcy threshold of RM150,000 (not yet law) and a wider Second Chance policy. Recovery against sole proprietors and guarantors is likely to become harder. Against companies, the RM50,000 winding-up threshold is unchanged. The earlier you act on an overdue company account, the more likely the company still has assets to pay you. See individual vs company debtor and winding-up a company over RM50,000.
Bad debt: claim or write off?
When a customer stops paying, decide quickly whether the debt is recoverable. A trading company with assets is usually worth pursuing; a dormant shell often is not. Our bad debt recovery service assesses older debts and pursues those with a realistic prospect. Use our debt claim calculator to value the claim including interest.

Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum wage from June 2027?
RM2,000, up from RM1,700, as announced in Budget 2027 and reported by The Edge.
Are SMEs exempt from the 2027 minimum wage increase?
The Edge reports that MSMEs with sales below RM50 million are exempt. Check the implementing order when published.
Will the wage rise increase bad debts?
We do not forecast that. Higher costs can stretch some employers' cash flow, so suppliers should monitor payment behaviour and review credit limits.
What are early signs a customer may default?
Payments drifting later, unexplained part payments, late disputes, new charges at SSM and adverse credit report entries.
